My journey with music began at a party hosted by a family friend, where the renowned jazz musician Erdoğan Çaplı (1926–1977) noticed my deep interest in music. He advised my family to support me in receiving a musical education if possible. Following his suggestion, I began studying piano at the Istanbul Conservatory. That day marked the beginning of a journey that has continued uninterrupted to this day.
Throughout my childhood, I listened to every kind of music broadcast on the radio. Since I played the piano, I was especially drawn to jazz classics. I admired the famous organist Jimmy Smith, listened to his recordings, and tried to play his pieces. Over time, I gravitated toward popular music and began playing piano in that genre. Listening to artists like Billy Joel and Elton John greatly influenced me and helped shape my path as a composer.
I began composing in high school and continued creating original works during my university years. At the time, there was only one TV channel in Turkey—TRT—and I started writing songs for children's programs. I would arrange these songs and record them live with a small orchestra during production. Later, I wrote songs for my own group, Yeni Türkü, and for many other artists. Between 1990 and 2016, I worked as the music director at the Istanbul City Theatres, where I composed countless scores and songs for stage productions. When writing a song, I usually draw my inspiration from the lyrics.
I would describe my musical style as world music that highlights the colors and sounds of Turkey. I’ve placed great importance on this approach ever since I became aware of my musical identity. Feedback I’ve received confirming this uniqueness has made me very happy. What sets my music apart are my choices of instrumentation, the melodies I personally value and include, the structural variation within the song, and its harmonic richness.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to revisit my archived works and have them performed by talented young vocalists I’ve met through various projects. These efforts have progressed significantly and are now in the final stages of mixing and visual production. Before releasing this vocal project, I completed an instrumental album titled Gece Misari, which is now available on platforms like Spotify and YouTube.
Music, much like visual art, evokes different emotions in each listener. When composing, I always start with an underlying narrative; without such a foundation, interpreting a song or creating an arrangement wouldn’t be possible. However, once a piece is complete, it can evoke a wide range of emotions in listeners. I feel truly happy when I receive feedback about these emotional connections.
Outside of music, I have another profession: I am a medical doctor and a specialist in pathology. Although I left the medical field in 1991, I still enjoy helping family and friends with their health concerns. While I don’t see it as a form of self-expression like music, I find great joy in guiding others with the most up-to-date and objective information available.
